Representing Suspects with Learning Disabilities
Training Provider:
The Law Society
This one hour webinar has been designed to assist criminal practitioners working with suspects and defendants who might have a learning disability. It takes you through:
• the prevalence of people with such difficulties in the criminal justice system;
• how to recognise when an individual might have a learning difficulty;
• practical steps that can be taken to support the individual; and
• where additional help and guidance can be found.
Protections as delineated in Statutes such as PACE and the Equality Act will be considered alongside special measures that can be employed to assist an individual's effective participation in court proceedings.
The webinar is presented by Jenny Talbot OBE. Jenny joined the Prison Reform Trust in 2006 to manage the No One Knows programme, which explored the prevalence and experiences of adult offenders with learning disabilities and difficulties. She is a member of the National Learning Disabilities Steering Group and in June 2011 received an OBE in recognition of her work on behalf of offenders with special needs in the criminal justice system.
The webinar takes the form of a live audio event accompanied by slides during which you will have the opportunity to ask questions. Following the event you will be able to revisit a recorded version.
The audio webinar will take place at 1 pm on 7 February 2012 and is scheduled to last one hour. To ensure your participation in this webinar, you will need to have registered your place by 5 pm on 6 February 2012.
